What is a kiddush cup?

At the beginning of a meal to mark a Jewish holiday (including Shabbat), a Kiddush is said over wine or juice. “Kiddush” is related to the Hebrew word “Kadosh”, which means holy. The Kiddush thanks God for the “fruit of the vine”, for creation, for the holiday in question, and for bringing us out of slavery in Egypt.

The cup that holds the wine or juice is called a Kiddush cup, and it is usually special in some way: it might be a little fancier, or saved only for that purpose, or it might be a special gift or heirloom.
