How do I start practising Shabbat?

Google this question, and you will find many answers. Many even an overwhelming number of answers. (We like this one from Reform Judaism: https://reformjudaism.org/learning/answers-jewish-questions/i-want-observe-shabbat-where-do-i-begin)

So maybe, a better question to ask is, “Why do I want to start observing Shabbat?”

If you have attended a Shabbat dinner and found the ritual meaningful or intriguing, you can start by learning the prayers over the candles, wine (or juice) and bread, and saying them before you start the meal. We have free downloads in English, Hebrew, and transliteration that will help you do just that. (hyperlinks).

If you like the idea of a day of rest, you can start by choosing one or two things that feel like “work” to you, and decide when you can do them other than on Shabbat. For some people, it’s the use of electronics. For some people, it’s doing things related to how you earn a living. For others, it may be the household chores that give you no joy. Or, start with one thing that you find relaxing, and make it part of your Shabbat routine. Like, a walk in the park. Or a bubble bath. Or a visit with friends.

If you like the idea of coming together with friends or family weekly, start inviting them for dinner Friday night. It might be the same people, or a rotating cast of characters, or both.

If you are looking to become part of a Jewish community, attend some Friday evening or Saturday morning services near you. If you’re in a large town, you’ll probably have a choice of where to go. Try a few out; each community has a different feel to it, and will range from very traditional to very progressive In its orientation. You are sure to find one that suits you. On the other hand, if you can’t attend services in person for one way or another, there are a broad range of options for attending virtually. You can download our free guide to finding streamed Services here.

No matter where you start, you’ll probably want to continue to add more to your Shabbat practice until it feels fully satisfying to you. When you are ready, you might consider buying our Basic Box or Simply Shabbat bag , which have the basic items you’ll need to celebrate Shabbat, along with the blessings.
